AI is added to a hardware product by introducing a software layer between the chip and the end user that handles interaction, services, and intelligence independently of the physical hardware. This means AI features — voice control, assistant integration, contextual awareness, connected services — can be deployed and updated without changing the underlying hardware design. The key principle is that AI lives in software, not silicon, which means it can be added, updated, and expanded across a product’s entire lifecycle.
Why AI doesn’t require new hardware
A common misconception is that adding AI to an audio product requires a new chip generation or a hardware redesign. In most cases it does not. Modern audio SoCs from major chip vendors already include the processing capability required to run on-device AI features. What’s missing is not hardware capability — it is the software infrastructure to make use of it.
The software layer that enables AI on existing hardware has four components: a device-to-app interaction contract that defines how the hardware communicates with the companion app, an app framework that surfaces AI features to the user, a services integration layer that connects the device to AI providers and third-party platforms, and an AI management layer that handles model deployment, updates, and compliance.
When these four components exist as a reusable platform, adding AI to a hardware product becomes a configuration and integration exercise rather than a full engineering build.
The integration process
Adding AI to a hardware product through a software platform follows a defined sequence.
Hardware compatibility check — the first step is confirming that the existing SoC supports the platform’s integration layer. If the device is built on a supported chip platform, the base integration is already partially complete.
Device-to-app contract definition — the interaction contract between the hardware and the companion app is established. This defines which hardware events (button presses, gestures, wakewords) map to which software actions, and how the app communicates state back to the device.
App framework configuration — the companion app is configured for the brand. Onboarding flows, device controls, personalisation options, and branded shortcuts are set up within the app framework rather than built from scratch.
Service and AI integration — services and AI features are activated through the platform’s integration layer. Music services, voice assistants, translation features, and other capabilities are connected as modules rather than individual engineering projects.
Testing and deployment — the integrated product is tested against defined interaction contracts before deployment. Updates and new capabilities can be deployed post-shipment through the same pipeline.
What this looks like in practice
For a brand building on a supported SoC, the process of adding AI through a software platform is fundamentally different from building AI capabilities in-house. The brand does not define a device-to-app communication protocol. It does not build a backend deployment system. It does not manage AI infrastructure, model updates, or compliance independently.
Instead the brand configures an existing framework, activates the services relevant to its audience, and deploys. The engineering effort concentrates on the product decisions — which features, which services, which interaction model — rather than on the infrastructure that makes those decisions executable.
What cannot be added in software
Post-shipment AI capabilities are bounded by the hardware that exists. Features that require hardware components not present in the original design — additional microphones, specific sensor arrays, dedicated neural processing units — cannot be added through software alone. The software layer can only enable capabilities the underlying hardware can support.
This is why the architecture decisions made at the hardware design stage determine the ceiling of what post-shipment AI evolution can deliver. A product designed with AI integration in mind from the start has a significantly higher capability ceiling than one where AI was retrofitted as an afterthought.
